Increased mantle convection during the midCretaceous A comparative study of mantle potential temperature

چکیده
Mantle convection patterns of the past are not well known, yet an understanding of changing mantle convection characteristics i fundamental to understanding the evolution of plate tectonics. There are very few ways to examine mantle characteristics of the past. Changes in spreading rate and volcanic activity with time have been used to draw conclusions about historic changes in mantle activity. Mantle temperature has been found to be related to crustal thickness. With this relationship, crustal thicknesses may now yield new conclusions about historic changes in mantle characteristics. We have inferred changes in mantle convection patterns throughout he last 180 m.y. by examining variations in assumed crustal thickness within the Pacific basin. Crustal thicknesses were calculated from residual depth anomalies by assuming that residual depth anomalies are the result of isostatic compensation of variations in crustal thickness. Crustal thickness is determined at the time of crustal formation and is dependent upon the temperature of the mantle source material. Intraplate hot spot volcanism effects on crustal thickness were not ignored. Examination of variations in crustal thickness of crust of different ages can reveal information about changing temperatures of the mantle at the ridge through time. We have learned that mantle temperatures at the ridge during the mid-Cretaceous were more variable than those temperatures at the ridge after the mid-Cretaceous. Furthermore, we have inferred from the data that mantle temperatures at hot spots were higher during the mid-Cretac•us than those at hot spots existing after the mid-Cretaceous. We suggest hat mantle conv<tion at the ridge was more rapid during the mid-Cretac•us causing a higher variability of temperatures at the ridge. We also note that this period of increased mantle convection is concurrent with the increased mantle temperatures at hot spots within the Pacific basin.

COMPARATIVE DEGASSING HISTORY OF EARTH AND VENUS. S. Franck and C. Bounama,
Introduction: Parameterized convection models have provided important results for the thermal history of the Earth and of other planets [1,2,3]. Schubert et al. [4] calculated a secular cooling of about 150°C-300°C since the Archaean and showed that a substantial portion of the present terrestrial heat flux is primordial with a Urey ratio of 0.65 to 0.85. For the first time Jackson and Pollack ...

A series of numerical simulations of thermal convection of Boussinesq fluid with infinite Prandtl number, with Rayleigh number 10, and with the strongly temperatureand depthdependent viscosity in a three-dimensional spherical shell is carried out to study the mantle convection of singleplate terrestrial planets like Venus or Mars without an Earth-like plate tectonics. The strongly temperature-d...

We perform numerical simulations in 3D spherical geometry to study the properties of convection in Europa’s silicate mantle using the finite-element code CitcomS including temperature-dependent viscosity. Our simulations show that thermal convection occurs if the reference viscosity is – PaS, rheological activation energy is 150-300 kJ/mol, and the viscosity contrast (due to temperature variati...
متن کاملMantle dynamics with pressure- and temperature-dependent thermal expansivity and conductivity
In numerical simulations of mantle convection it is commonly assumed that the coefficients of thermal expansion a and thermal conduction k are either constant or pressure-dependent. Pressure changes are generally computed using parametrizations that rely on extrapolations of low-pressure data for a single upper-mantle phase. Here we collect data for both the pressure and temperature dependence ...
متن کاملMantle convection, the asthenosphere, and Earth’s thermal history
Calculations of mantle convection generally use constant rates of internal heating and time-invariant core-mantle boundary temperature. In contrast, parameterized convection calculations, sometimes called thermal history calculations, allow these properties to vary with time but only provide a single average temperature for the entire mantle. Here I consider three-dimensional spherical convecti...
